google classroom updates
“With the start of the new school year, we wanted to share some of the BIG updates to Google Classroom this summer that staff had access to and can be used for the 2024/25 School year.
https://infohub.nyced.org/nyc-doe-topics/it/doe-applications-and-systems/google-workspace
STUDENT GROUPS: This enables teachers to create groups of students to make assigning differentiated content easier. This update will allow them to quickly assign classwork to pre-defined sets of students without having to tediously select individual students.
STUDENT ENGAGEMENT SIGNALS: With this update, teachers will have easily accessible visibility into whether students have made progress on assignments with Drive attachments through pre-existing workflows in Classroom.
ENHANCED GUARDIAN SUMMARIES: Guardian email summaries will now include links that let guardians preview their student's Classwork pages, including assigned work and attachments provided by the teacher. Guardians will not be able to see their student’s grades or submissions, class communication, or other students’ work.
"MISSING" GRADE STATUS: Teachers now have the ability to manually mark an assignment as ‘missing’ or ‘complete’ and automatically add a default draft score.
READ ALONG: A new feature that helps students build their independent reading skills by enabling teachers to assign differentiated reading activities, based on Lexile® measure, grade level, or phonics skills. With this feature, a digital reading buddy, Diya, gives students real-time assistance and pronunciation support, with the help of AI.

Important Cybersecurity Awareness on Phishing Tactics
From the desk of DIIT...
You and your staff should be aware of deceptive social engineering tactics, such as phishing, smishing, and spoofing, aimed at tricking you into taking an action you should not, like clicking on a harmful link in an email. To address this ongoing issue, DOE users will now see “[EXTERNAL]” appended to the subject line of all emails received from the @gmail.com domain. Gmail has been identified for this initiative because most phishing emails received by DOE users come from Gmail addresses.
School staff should remain vigilant and take proactive measures to protect sensitive information. You may see an email from a name you recognize but coming from an email address outside of “@schools.nyc.gov”. The addition of the “[EXTERNAL]” text to subject lines for all emails received from the @gmail.com domain will help you spot these red flags and can alert you to these impersonation and phishing attempts. Be extra vigilant when opening these emails. While “[EXTERNAL]” will not be added to emails from other addresses such as @yahoo.com, @hotmail.com, it is important to treat those with caution as well.
If you encounter a suspicious email, please report it immediately in Outlook by using the Report Phishing feature. For more information on phishing refer to the Cybersecurity Infohub page. Please share this information with all school staff.
For questions, email DOETechUpdates@schools.nyc.gov.
